CHEMOTHERAPY ISACRUCIALELEMENTto survival for many cancer patients. But chemotherapy kills both cancerous cells and other normal cells that grow at a fast rate. Red blood cells and platelets are among the list of fast-growing cells affected by chemotherapy. Without the help of very dedicated platelet donors, many cancer patients would not be able to continue their treatments. Platelet transfusions help patients avoid the risk of excessive bleeding associated with low platelet counts. Platelets are needed by  children and adults with cancer, leukemia, and victims of traumatic injuries and those undergoing a transplant. The donation (plateletpheresis) process takes approximately 90 minutes and whatever platelets are collected will be replaced by your own body within 24 to 48 hours. Donated platelets only have a shelf life of five days so new donors are always needed! Since now you know how important platelets are, please consider becoming a platelet donor! Please call the American Red Cross at 1 (800) 462-2229, ext. 945 or (413) 785-0945 for more info. The American Red Cross Donor Center is located at 3500 Main St., Springfield.
